Last week we spent some time creating personalized calendars for the Controversial Issue Project 2014. These calendars broke down the tasks into smaller chunks, making “due dates” along the way so that nothing is left until the last minute. Students have access to an online tool called Noodle Tools, which helps them put together their bibliography. They do not have to use this, but it is an account they will have available all the way through high school and does make things a bit easier when it comes to documenting sources. Students have access to the iPads in school, but the computer labs and library are closed during the month of SBAC testing. This means that if a student chose the website some of the features will not be accessible on the iPads and will have to be input at home. However, if students have any technical issues they should let me know so that we could work it on on my desktop computer at school.

Please consider taking your child to a public library (outside of school) to look for books on their individual topic if you haven’t already. We have access to technology in school (computers and iPads), but there is nothing like a good ‘ole fashioned book. Like I tell students, why search billions of web pages when a book might exist that someone already researched and spent a great deal of time writing. The projects will conclude on Tuesday, May 27, which is also the night of the spring concert and spring open house. This way, parents will have the opportunity to check out the projects that evening. While students will be doing a lot of this in school, some work will be expected to be done at home as well depending on particular project choices that students make.
