Our Egg Drop went very well last week. Students slightly edged me by having 12 successful egg containers while I was able to destroy 11 eggs. However, as I explained to students, it’s not about whether the egg broke or not, it’s about the time and testing that went into the project. Students who showed solid evidence of testing and submitted a great report will still do very well on the project, whether the egg broke or not.

The entire fifth grade heads to Sturbridge Village on Friday, October 10. As of this writing, students haven’t received the permission slip yet, but hopefully this will be sent home Monday or Tuesday. I am still looking for one more chaperone to join us at Sturbridge that day. According to Avon Public School rules, the chaperone must be fingerprinted (in the past year – or plan on doing so in the next couple of weeks) to be able to come along. E-mail me if you are interested.

Both the bike ride and Winding Trails trip went very well last week – perfect weather for both of them. Thank you to our parent bike riders and all the parents who made it happen by lugging a bike to the library at 7 AM. Welcome to fall (as of Monday evening at 10:29 PM).

Our Egg Drop will take place Wednesday morning at 9 AM. Parents/grandparents/small kids (not yet in school) are welcome to attend and watch the egg destruction. Please do NOT come inside the building. Instead, meet us outside near the south entrance where parent drop off/pickup takes place. The egg drop will take place right around that area, but you’ll know exactly where when you see all the kids marching out. After the eggs are dropped, you are invited to come back in the classroom. At this stage I’ll open all the containers one at a time to see if the egg survived or if I was successfully able to destroy it. I’ll be happy to start with the containers of those who the visitors came to see so you don’t have to stick around if time is tight. You are more than welcome to watch all the containers get opened if you would like.

Homework slips begin on Tuesday. My homework policy requires students to turn in homework each morning with their name on it (because breaking out the microscope to analyze the handwriting patterns ain’t happening). I have been lenient thus far and have given personalized reminders to all students as they get used to this. Those days are over. (Insert dramatic music.)

We will be taking our bike ride to school (optional) on Thursday, September 18. For anyone interested in going, we will be leaving from the Avon Free Public Library at 7 AM. We will be joined by students from Mr. Lindberg’s class as well. Anyone attending will need to bring a working bike (with properly inflated tires) and a helmet that fits. Permission slips went out a couple weeks ago and students cannot ride without one. Bikes will need to be picked up from Thompson Brook either later that day or afternoon by a parent. If the bike cannot be picked up until the following day, I would recommend putting a bike lock on the bike (and there is a bike rack in front of the school).

Our team goes to Winding Trails on Friday. Students should dress in layers since the mornings could be chilly this time of year, yet be toasty by afternoon. They also need to bring a lunch in a sturdy bag, preferably disposable. By sturdy I mean no brown paper bags unless they have a plastic shopping bag (or something strong) around it. Brown bags always break making for happy ants and unhappy students. The kids move the lunches several times and eat in the woods. Disposable is just more convenient for them so they don’t have to carry it site to site after they eat.

This week students begin their third partial week of school. As they learn routines, we will continue to move more and more into the regular academics. My homework policy requires students to turn in homework each morning, but I have been lenient thus far and have given reminders to all students as they get used to this. In the near future though, I will start giving out homework slips.

Grade 5 Open House is Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30 PM. It’s my opportunity to tell parents what adventures we will be embarking on this year, and how parents can best help me out on the home end. Please try to attend.

A couple weeks ago, I told students about an (optional) early morning bike ride I will be taking with the class on Thursday, September 18. For anyone interested in going, we will be leaving from the Avon Free Public Library at 7 AM. We will be joined by students from Mr. Lindberg’s class as well. Anyone attending will need to bring a working bike (with properly inflated tires) and a helmet. Permission slips went out last week. I hope that everyone had a great Labor Day weekend. It was a nice buffer between a two-day and a four-day week for students. I will be posting a Weekly Newsletter on this website with information about the upcoming week, a cartoon/picture, and below that a snapshot calendar of upcoming events. I also provide a paper newsletter, the Monday Memo, which goes out each Monday (or the first day of the school week). Students will receive their first one on Tuesday and this should be signed by a parent/guardian and returned to school the next day.

Grade 5 Open House is next Tuesday, September 9 at 6:30 PM. It’s my opportunity to tell parents what adventures we will be embarking on this year, and how parents can best help me out on the home end. Please try to attend.
