Happy May. Next month is June – doesn’t that sound wonderful? Our visit to see our Book Buddies was supposed to be on Friday, but will be on Monday instead. Permission slips/money for the Nathan Hale field trip is due by May 9. The paperwork went out about a week ago.
Our book project (the book that students are writing with the hopes of publishing by the end of the year) is coming along nicely. After a couple months, we completed our draft on Friday. Now comes the tedious process of editing and revising.
Smarter Balanced (SBAC) testing is this week for sixth graders, and then the fifth graders will take it next week. Good times.

Students took the Unit 7: Multiplying and Dividing Fractions test last week, and this week we will be starting Unit 8: Geometry. We also finished up the American Revolution book groups.
We will be visiting our book buddies over at Pine Grove later in the week.

I hope that everyone had a great vacation. With the return of the April Vacation to Avon (after a hiatus of several years), this puts the remnants of fifth grade at the two month mark.
We basically completed Unit 7 of math just before vacation, but we’ll do a recap on Monday since humans’ brains (myself included) sometimes turn to mush over an extended break. The test will be mid to late week. This will also be the final week of the American Revolution book groups. These will conclude by the end of the week.

This week students will take the CMT practice test on Monday, and then take the CMT Science test on Tuesday. For the first time, this test will be all online like the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) tests. The SBAC testing will take place in May this year. Students are still required to take the CMT Science Test in grades 5 and 8. The fifth grade test actually covers content that students learned in grades 3, 4, and 5.
Students finished their last science unit of the year that they will be switching teachers for. There is one more science unit (Matter and Energy in Organisms and Ecosystems), but they will stay with me for this last unit. This will start sometime in late April.
