Sturbridge Tidbits

No students have melted so far this year and no one is going to melt during tomorrow’s Sturbridge rain. As of this moment, Sturbridge is on and good to go. If it was up to me, the trip wouldn’t be canceled unless there was an actual tornado spotted in the village itself. That or a tsunami. Or maybe a zoo escape.

It’s going to rain. A lot.

Here’s the deal though – I’ve taken students there in the rain before and because much of the village is wooded and there are plenty of buildings to pop into, it’s not miserable. It will also be in the mid ’60s so they won’t catch a cold. I’m not sure how one catches a cold anyway, but I’m not allowing any catching to happen tomorrow. That’s my rule.

Students should bring a rain jacket or at the very least bring an umbrella. They need a lunch and they will have to carry it around with them so a small backpack (like those drawstring ones most kids use for gym) would be a smart idea. The roads are mostly dirt and using the scientific principle of dirtology: rain + dirt = mud. Students should keep this in mind as they decide between old sneakers or high heels. We are taking the “fancy” buses as one student said today, equipped with enough fabric to drown out their screams. Good news for the adults. They can bring electronics for the ride (about an hour each way), but they are 100% responsible for their own device. If they decide to leave their devices on the bus, I cannot guarantee against a couple of Bonnie & Clydes from the hills of Massachusetts making off with a sack of iPods. Sure, it’s unlikely and the bus will be locked, but ya never know… They can carry their devices with them, but I recommend putting them in plastic bags to prevent against possible water damage. They will not need any money as they will not be allowed to go into gift shops or food courts. Think of it like the mid 1700s – Connecticut money is no good in Massachusetts.

Everything I mentioned above was discussed in class today, but I just wanted to pass on the same message to you. Unless I hear otherwise, we’re a go.

Holiday Bear Walmart Trip

Our class participated in the Holiday Bear Project, which is a charity that sponsors children who need a little holiday boost. We sponsored a brother and sister from Danbury whose family was having a difficult time and needed some help to provide gifts for their kids for the upcoming holidays.

To earn money for our shopping trip to Walmart, students did jobs around the house. Another thing we did was to use the iPad, laptops, and other computer devices to look up the names and phone numbers of local businesses. Students worked on scripts that we used to call businesses asking for their support for this charitable cause. We raised $530 and on November 30 we took a trip to Walmart in Avon (after school) and 20 students came along. We were able to purchase clothes, shoes, electronics, books, and other gifts for the two kids.

“More Than Money” Junior Achievement conference

On Friday, October 28 about half the class attended the Junior Achievement More Than Money conference at the Aetna campus in Hartford. The keynote speaker taught students about manufacturing and its impact on the Connecticut economy. Students then broke up into smaller groups and played some games involving debits/credits. They learned about small businesses, saving, and what it takes to be an entrepreneur in today’s economy.
