This week, we finally make it to May where I continue to insist that the real spring stay for good. I’m getting really sick of putting on a winter coat in the morning. Last Wednesday, students honed their weeding and mulching skills and helped beautify the front of the school. We cleaned, weeded, and then spread mulch in the area to the left and right of the school’s main entrance. If your child tells you that he or she does not know how to help with yard work, it’s a lie.

I am taking seven students from our class to the Junior Achievement Partners In Achievement Breakfast on May 17. Here is an article on the event from this week’s Avon Patch.

Several weeks ago, the 5-1 Team (four classes, including your child’s) was introduced to the Big 6 Project. This team based project will take six weeks and concludes on May 20. During our Spring Open House on May 21 you will be able to visit the classroom and see the final results from the entire class. Basically, this is a Controversial Issue Research Project. We will be spending a lot of time on this in school, teaching explicit research skills, and working on a physical and technology based component. Here is the Big 6 Project 2013 that students received.

Upcoming Events

JA Partners In Achievement Breakfast – Friday, May 17

Big 6 Project Due – Monday, May 20

Spring Open House – Tuesday, May 21

Nathan Hale Homestead – June (sometime the first week)

Camp Chase – Friday, June 21

Last Day of School – Thursday, June 27

Last week was fake April Vacation and based on the attendance list it looks like over half the class was there on Thursday with a few more there on Friday. I was not there either.

Next week is fake April vacation, with the first three days of the week off. I’m beginning to really dislike snow. I sent an e-mail out last week asking how many students would be out of school on Thursday, April 18 or Friday, April 19. So far, it looks like about half the class will be absent on the Thursday and about eight students will be absent on Friday.

Students were introduced to the American Revolution Famous Person Speeches about a month ago and the speeches are this week. Parents are invited to come listen to their child’s speech. More specific information on a time window for each speech was e-mailed out last week.

On Monday morning the 5-1 Team (four classes, including your child’s) will be introduced to the Big 6 Project. This team based project will take the next six weeks and conclude on May 20. During our Spring Open House on May 21 you will be able to visit the classroom and see the final results from the entire class. I would have preferred to introduce this after the speeches, but with all the snow days and the extended CMT schedule it just didn’t work out in order to give them plenty of time. We will be spending a lot of time on this in school, teaching explicit research skills, and working on a physical and technology based component.
