We have our second to last four-dayer of the school year. The last four-day week is the final week of the school year. Thank you to everyone who stopped by the Spring Open House last week. Students worked very hard on their Big 6 Projects and have been sharing the projects over the last week and will continue this week, too. The forecast for the end of the week is in the 90s so students should dress for the weather. The air conditioning does not kick on until the temperature is almost 80 degrees so on hot days the classrooms are a little steamy. Our field trip to the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry is next Tuesday.

I took seven students from our class (and another seven 6th graders) to the Junior Achievement Partners In Achievement Breakfast on Friday at the Downtown Hartford Marriott. The students greeted and schmoozed with about 450 business men and women from all over Connecticut. Here is an article on the event from Avon Patch and below is a picture of us at the event.

On Tuesday from 6:15-6:45 you are welcome to stop by the classroom for the Spring Open House. It is a no-program, casual event just meant for parents to see what their child has been up to lately in fifth grade. If your child is involved in the concert, that will follow the Open House.

Six weeks ago, the 5-1 Team (four classes, including your child’s) was introduced to the Big 6 Project. Two weeks ago students received the Big 6 Final Two Weeks packet and Big 6 Rubric 2013, both which outline what they have to complete prior to May 20. During our Spring Open House on May 21 you will be able to visit the classroom and see the final results from the entire class. Basically, this is a Controversial Issue Research Project. We have been spending a lot of time on this in school, teaching explicit research skills, and working on a physical and technology based component. Here is the Big 6 Project 2013 that students received.

Thursday marks day 30, with 30 days left in the school year. It’s a long June, but we also have a lot of fun mini-projects (nothing even remotely like the Big 6) and other fun events planned for the rest of the year.

Five weeks ago, the 5-1 Team (four classes, including your child’s) was introduced to the Big 6 Project. Last Monday students received the Big 6 Final Two Weeks packet and Big 6 Rubric 2013, both which outline what they have to complete prior to May 20. During our Spring Open House on May 21 you will be able to visit the classroom and see the final results from the entire class. Basically, this is a Controversial Issue Research Project. Here is the Big 6 Project 2013 that students received.
