Students have a Simple Machines test in Science on Thursday. They will receive a study guide on Monday. We will be using this to help practice study skills using a variety of study techniques. Obviously, study skills are an essential part of their schooling and will be more and more important as the years go by. It’s best to start as early as possible. In addition, a week ago I gave students an opportunity to do a Rube Goldberg project at home (like the one we already did in school) for extra credit on the test. Students who wish to complete this optional extra credit assignment have until Friday. All they have to turn in is a video of the project. Specific details were shared with each student as a Google Doc.

Well, gotta love the Connecticut spring. The last day of school is Monday, June 23 so this week marks the three-month-left point. It was great seeing all of you at the parent/teacher conferences last week. Although that’s our last “official” meeting, please don’t hesitate to contact me at any time over the next three months.

The Unit 5 Math test is scheduled for Thursday (with an optional, extra math review on Thursday morning). This is of course subject to change with the arrival of some unwanted white stuff from the skies. We have a student/faculty basketball game on Friday. A couple students from our class will be participating in this.

I hope you all have a wonderful St. Patrick’s Day. Students started a theme movie project last week – using the iPads, they are filming and editing a movie trailer based on the historical fiction short stories they wrote. After completing storyboards, filming will start this week.

The March Parent/Teacher Conferences are this week – officially on March 20-21, but I always open up every morning of the week to give more flexibility. I e-mailed the electronic sign-up form last week, and you were automatically signed up for the previous day/time you had in the fall. The only reason you would need to sign in now is to check that day/time or to make a change.

The fact that spring is within striking distance greatly excites me. I like snow and I like skiing, but like someone who works in a chocolate store, the novelty eventually loses its appeal. For me, the magic is gone and I want to grill every night. Of course, there’s another mish-mosh of snowy weather being forecasted for Wednesday. Boo.

Since there was no Smarter Balanced Science replacement test, fifth and eight graders are still required to take the Science CMT and this will take place mid-week. This is a quick, one-shot deal (and covers material learned in 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades) and to be completely honest, it’s a mere technicality that forces students to take this. All the other CMT tests have been eliminated. You will not see any growth because this is the first year that students take it and it might be the last (considering the next isn’t until eight grade and it will probably disappear by then).

We finally made it to March and it looks like the monster storm scheduled to hit us at the start of the week is going to be much wimpier than expected. Phew. The Science Center trip on Friday went very well. The students really seemed to enjoy it and it was a fantastic review of so many concepts students learned in third and fourth grades that might appear on the Science CMT. The March Parent/Teacher Conferences are in about three weeks. I will put out a sign-up form soon, but you will automatically be signed up for the previous time you had in the fall. The only reason you would need to sign in is to check that day/time or make a change.
