On Friday we went to the More Than Money Conference at Aetna in Hartford. This was a Junior Achievement sponsored program only open to fifth graders in Connecticut. Students learned about entrepreneurship and starting a business, as well as how to keep a check register.

Students will take the Unit 2 Math test on Friday. This is mostly on division and multiplication. The review packet will go home on Tuesday, we will review in class on Thursday, and the test will be on Friday. I will also hold an extra, optional review session before school on Friday at 7:30 AM.

Our trip to Sturbridge Village went very well on Friday. Despite the forecast for a wet and dreary day, we escaped all rain up until the walk back to the bus. We were very lucky.

Students start their first science switch of the year this week. Up until this point, they had science with me, and learned about Simple Machines. This week, they will start going to Mrs. Spencer’s room on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays working on a Flight & Rocketry unit. This will last a total of 17 classes then they will switch again and then again, and finally finish off the year in science with me.

On Friday we are going to the More Than Money Conference at Aetna in Hartford. This is a Junior Achievement sponsored program only open to fifth graders in Connecticut. Students will learn about money and business. If they ordered a sandwich they will be fed as well. The food is free. Students chose whether or not to order food or bring their own lunch/drink.

After a two-dayer last week we’re back to a five dayer this week. Right before the little mini-vacation we spent some time working on personal organization. We talked about how adults stay organized with sticky notes, planners, cell phones, etc. Many students then made their own checklists to help remind them of things to do in the morning/afternoon in while in the classroom. This would be a great follow up activity to do at home, too. Everyone is different in what works best so talk to your child about what system of organization works best for him/her. Start simple with tasks that are sometimes forgotten at home – cleaning room, making bed, picking clothes off the floor, starting homework, or whatever routines you have in your own home. At at-home checklist is a great place to start, but again, use what works best.

We head to Sturbridge Village on Friday. Students will be walking quite a bit so sneakers are a must, as well as a lunch/drink. The class will be split into a few groups and each group will decide for themselves where to eat. Therefore, students will be walking around with lunches for a few hours. Those tiny drawstring backpacks are great on this trip. Regular backpacks are a pain – otherwise, students are better off carrying their lunches in a sturdy disposable bag. Electronics are allowed on the bus, but they cannot make an appearance in Sturbridge itself.

Students took their first math test on Thursday, and we started the next math unit on Friday. Unit 2 is called Computing With Whole Numbers. In plain English that means multiplication (6,827 x 3, 64 x 22, etc.) division (1,284 ÷ 4, 504 ÷ 9, etc.) as well as word problems involving both of these skills.

This is a four day week, which is followed by a two day week. It’s an interesting calendar start to October.
