Students will take the Unit 4 Math Test on Friday. They will receive the Math Review Packet on Monday, and we’ll go over it on Wednesday (because we will be out most of the day on Thursday). As usual, I will offer an extra, optional review session before school on Friday at 7:30 AM.

On Monday, our class will be meeting up with our Book Buddies for the first time over at Pine Grove.  This year, our class will be partnering up with a first grade class (Mrs. Blascak’s class at Pine Grove) for a Book Buddy program. This is more of a mentoring program than a reading one, but the kids at both grade levels get so much out of it.

A couple weeks ago week, we launched the prep work for our class business, Bungles. Students filled out a job application for positions, and then received jobs as managers, sales representatives, or advertising agents. They will be working hard in preparation for our grand opening on Wednesday.

We were invited to attend the Hartford Hawks Education Day at the University of Hartford on Thursday. This is an opportunity for students to check out a college campus (at the University of Hartford); explore the classrooms, dorm, libraries, dining halls, and more to see what life is like on a college campus. In conjunction with this, students will learn in advance things like saving for college, where we will look at the power of compound interest. We will explore the campus in the morning and then head to a basketball game late morning, where students will eat lunch while watching a men’s division I basketball game – UHart vs. Navy.

The World Food Fest is a month long geography project that culminates with a big celebration on Friday. Parents are invited to come join us, and if any grandparents are in town for the holidays feel free to have them join us as well. This also serves as our holiday party. There will be a lot of food, and the students will be working very hard to prepare for this event.

It was great seeing so many of you at the Parent/Teacher Conferences last week. Although we have spring conferences, feel free to contact me at any time if you would like an update on your child.

I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to pull it off this year, but it all fell into place in the past week, and our class will be partnering up with a first grade class (Mrs. Blascak’s class at Pine Grove) for a Book Buddy program. This is more of a mentoring program than a reading one, but the kids at both grade levels get so much out of it. Our first meeting will be on December 19 when we walk over to Pine Grove in the afternoon.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are this week. If you need a reminder just check the sign up sheet online. Conferences are for parents only. If you need to bring your child, that’s fine, but have them wait outside the classroom and read the dictionary or something.

I want to give a big thank you to everyone for all the help and support with our Holiday Bear Project. So many people helped in a variety of ways – student donations for doing extra chores, family donations, business donations, providing wrapping paper, driving students to Walmart, helping out the groups at the store, driving gifts back to school, and wrapping gifts tomorrow morning.

We ended up raising a lot of money to purchase gifts for the two kids we sponsored – a five-year-old boy and an eight-year-old girl. There was even some leftover money at the end that I was able to use to buy gift cards on my way home this evening to throw into the presents as well. Hopefully, we’ll help them have a much brighter holiday season this year.
This morning, students received a lesson on the technical art of wrapping presents, both rectangular prisms and odd shapes, and they will practice their new skills tomorrow morning. Don’t let them try to convince you they can’t help you wrap presents this year. They know how.

Parent/Teacher Conferences are next week (the week of December 5-9). If you haven’t already signed up yet for a conference slot, please do so soon.
