If you’re looking for things to do in Connecticut this summer check out CT Visit. It’s loaded with day trips and ideas to keep you and your children occupied so they do not drive you insane. My five-year-old son likes to pretend our house is a indoor track (or sometimes indoor bumper cars) when he’s bored so if you can relate then the site might be for you.

Study Island is still active for students as well. Students have full access to both Language Arts and Math so this is a great place to send them for some review and preview. (Or just something to do while taking a break from hitting their siblings.) You could even keep track of their progress and whatever particular skills might be in need of extra review/practice. This works well on iPods, Smartphones, and all tablets, too. Mr. Nussbaum is a an excellent website for all subject areas and when we used it this year students really enjoyed the game-style of learning. The ability to type at a decent rate becomes more and more important as students progress through the grades. There are many typing programs out there and Avon Public Schools, like most schools in the U.S., has Type to Learn. Many versions of this could be found on Amazon or eBay, both new and used. However, plenty of free, online programs exist. Typing Web and KeyBr are just a couple.

Encourage your child to keep reading. Barnes & Noble even has a Summer Reading Program for students up to sixth grade where they will give out a free book to anyone who reads eight books over the summer. All students have to do is fill out the form (see attached) and bring it into a Barnes & Noble store to get their free book.

I just wanted to say thank you to everyone for all your support both in and out of school this year. A special thank you goes out to Karen Kucharski and Amy Lodovico for all the extra time and effort they put in to make our celebrations memorable and delicious. Finally, thank you all for the gift cards – they will certainly come in handy over the next couple of months. It was a great year and now it’s time to enjoy the summer!

Our trip to Camp Chase on Friday went very well. The weather was sunny and in the mid 80s all day and the students had a blast swimming, playing sports, and hanging out with their friends.

This is it. The finish. The finale.

We conclude the fifth grade year with 3 1/2 days this week. Field Day was rained out a couple weeks ago and has been officially moved to Monday. Students made t-shirts in school and they could change into them in the morning. Snacks should be packed in a separate bag with each student’s name on it because we will be outside the entire morning and we will bring those out. Lunch will be available to buy (as normal), but I told students that the lines could be long because all of Grade 5 is eating at the same time that day. Sunscreen and a water bottle is a must. Hats are optional.

Our Beach Read-In is on Tuesday morning from 9-11 AM. On this day students should bring in materials to read and they could also bring beach chairs and/or beach towels. Again, a repeat on the sunscreen, water bottle and hat.

Wednesday is our class BBQ. The room parents sent out information about that – contact them if you have any questions.

Thursday is a half-day. Students will be dismissed at 11:20 AM.

Our Z-Night on Friday went very well. Most of the students on our team (Lindberg, Pooler, Spencer, and Lynch) attended. We played games, sports, watched a movie, made bracelets and necklaces, drank lemonade, and ate popcorn and ice cream. It was a nice way to begin winding down the year in a casual, after-school setting.

This is our last full week of the year. Field Day was rained out last week and has been officially moved to Monday, June 24. We are taking students to Camp Chase on Friday. This is a full day event and students will have the opportunity to play different sports, hang out, and go swimming in the large, heated pool. Students need to bring sneakers, a bathing suit/towel, sunscreen, and bring a lunch/water.

Last week we took a trip to the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry. They learned about Nathan Hale, a Connecticut native, but more importantly, there were many lessons about the American Revolution and Connecticut’s ties to the war.

On Thursday morning, Mr. Lindberg and I took interested students on a bike ride to school. Many parents also journeyed with us that crisp morning. Thank you to everyone who participated.

On Thursday, June 13 the fifth graders have Field Day. Students should wear sneakers and bring sunscreen as we will be outside most of the day. In preparation for Field Day, students are writing chants, song, coming up with a mascot, designing an outfit for the mascot, and coming up with a plan for what other students should wear. On Friday, June 14 our team is hosting our third annual Z-Night at Thompson Brook. Permission Slips were due on Friday for those who were interested in attending. We will be having a variety of sports and crafts for students that day.

Our field trip to the Nathan Hale Homestead in Coventry is on Tuesday. Students should bring a lunch and a drink. On Thursday morning I am taking any interested student on an early morning Bike Ride to School (just like we did in the fall). Mr. Lindberg and I will meet students at the Avon Free Public Library at 7 AM. Permission Slips were sent home last week and are due by Wednesday if students are interested. (No charge.) I would also love if some parents would come along for the ride – it’s a flat, easy ride and a great way to start the day.
