We have three more weeks of school (plus an extra 3 1/2 hours the following Monday, June 23). We’ve off to the Nathan Hale Homestead on Monday. In our study of the American Revolution, students have learned the importance of spies during the American Revolution. Many believe that if weren’t for George Washington’s excellent spy network, we never would have won the war. Nathan Hale is Connecticut’s state hero for his role in the war both as a soldier and as a spy. He wasn’t exactly a good spy, but he was brave enough to go on a very dangerous mission for his country. That is what we honor him for today.

Students received a permission slip a couple weeks ago, but our  bike ride to school is on Thursday morning. Like the fall bike ride, we will leave from the Free Avon Public Library that morning. Any student who is attending needs a working bike (with inflated tires) and a working helmet that fits. (Unfortunately, many students have showed up in the past with broken helmets or bikes with flat tires. This makes it unsafe for other kids as one adult has to stay back to deal with that.) Like before, we need parent volunteers to join us on the ride. It’s a flat, easy ride so please come along!

The Controversial Issue Project 2014 is due on Tuesday, which is also the night of the spring concert and spring open house. The open house runs from 6:15-6:45 PM and is followed by the concert. Feel free to bring the entire family – there is nothing formal – just a walk around to check out students’ work. The projects are due in school that morning and parents will have the opportunity to check out the projects that evening.

Students received a permission slip last week, but Mr. Lindberg and I will be taking interested students on a bike ride to school on the morning of Thursday, June 5. Like the fall bike ride, we will leave from the Free Avon Public Library that morning. Any student who is attending needs a working bike (with inflated tires) and a working helmet that fits. (Unfortunately, many students have showed up in the past with broken helmets or bikes with flat tires. This makes it unsafe for other kids as one adult has to stay back to deal with that.) Monday is significant because it marks the 25th day. That is, 25 days left in the school year. Students will receive a permission slip soon, but Mr. Lindberg and I will be taking interested students on a bike ride to school on the morning of June 5. The Controversial Issue Project 2014 will conclude on Tuesday, May 27, which is also the night of the spring concert and spring open house. They are due in school that morning and parents will have the opportunity to check out the projects that evening. While students will be doing a lot of this in school, some work will be expected to be done at home as well depending on particular project choices that students make.

Last week we spent some time creating personalized calendars for the Controversial Issue Project 2014. These calendars broke down the tasks into smaller chunks, making “due dates” along the way so that nothing is left until the last minute. Students have access to an online tool called Noodle Tools, which helps them put together their bibliography. They do not have to use this, but it is an account they will have available all the way through high school and does make things a bit easier when it comes to documenting sources. Students have access to the iPads in school, but the computer labs and library are closed during the month of SBAC testing. This means that if a student chose the website some of the features will not be accessible on the iPads and will have to be input at home. However, if students have any technical issues they should let me know so that we could work it on on my desktop computer at school.

Please consider taking your child to a public library (outside of school) to look for books on their individual topic if you haven’t already. We have access to technology in school (computers and iPads), but there is nothing like a good ‘ole fashioned book. Like I tell students, why search billions of web pages when a book might exist that someone already researched and spent a great deal of time writing. The projects will conclude on Tuesday, May 27, which is also the night of the spring concert and spring open house. This way, parents will have the opportunity to check out the projects that evening. While students will be doing a lot of this in school, some work will be expected to be done at home as well depending on particular project choices that students make.
