Permission slips went out last week for our trip to the Nathan Hale Homestead on Monday, June 2. Please return the slips/money by Friday. Students started taking the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) tests last week and testing this week will be on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Monday will be an in-class activity and this will be followed by two days in the computer lab. Here are all the testing days: April 28, April 29, May 5, May 6, May 7, May 19, May 20, May 27, and May 28. In between these testing days students will also take a math placement test, a writing prompt assessment, the Degrees of Reading Power (DRP) assessment, the math application universal screening assessment, the math universal computation assessment, an ORF reading assessment, a MAZE reading assessment, and benchmark assessments.

Students are currently working on the Controversial Issue Project 2014. This is a major research project that students started several weeks ago and will be continuing to work on for the next three weeks. Students already have their topics and have been doing research on the topics, and also learned how to write bibliographies (using an online tool called Noodle Tools). Please consider taking your child to a public library (outside of school) to look for books on their individual topic. We have access to technology in school (computers and iPads), but there is nothing like a good ‘ole fashioned book. Like I tell students, why search billions of web pages when a book might exist that someone already researched and spent a great deal of time writing. The projects will conclude on Tuesday, May 27, which is also the night of the spring concert and spring open house. This way, parents will have the opportunity to check out the projects that evening. While students will be doing a lot of this in school, some work will be expected to be done at home as well depending on particular project choices that students make.

I hope that everyone had a restful April Vacation. As of mid-week, we will hit the two month’s left in the year mark. Students are currently working on the Controversial Issue Project 2014. This is a major research project that students will be working on for the next four weeks.
