As I write this on Friday, the possibility looms of more white stuff falling from the sky on Sunday night. Since we haven’t had a normal school-day Monday in the past three weeks, it doesn’t seem like we’re going to start anytime soon. Five weeks until the March vacation.
This week, students are going to start presenting the reading book previews they created using Google Slides. These previews were based on a book they’ve read this school year, and will serve as a backdrop to a presentation they will give the class. The point of the book preview is to get the class excited about new books that their classmates have read. Certain criteria was required for these slides, including text, graphics, and animated .gifs.

With such a mild winter thus far, I hope that everyone enjoyed the infusion of snow on Saturday. We’re finally back to an official five-day week after Mondays off for the past two weeks.
We’re jumping headfirst into our study of the American Revolution this week, which is part of our Language Arts unit. We’ll be taking a close look at the original colonies, and how they played a role in the conflict that was soon to take place shortly after their formation.

It’s another four day week here at TBS. There is no school on Monday for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. Last week students had the opportunity to watch the entire I Have a Dream Speech. They took notes on the speech as if they were newspaper reporters, and then started the process of creating their own newspaper, which included an article on the famous speech.
Early this week, students will complete a fictional story about the town of Roanoke’s mysterious disappearance in the 1500s. Some may not be actually finished to the end (which is ok) because many students asked to continue to stories on their own. However, if you have a chance, ask your child to see his/her story on Google Docs. The stories are great and show many of the writing skills we’ve been working on this year.
We started Unit 4 in math last week – Multiplying and Dividing Decimals. Students were given back the Unit 3 test last week. Overall, the test scores were very good.

We have four day weeks both this week and next with no school on Friday, January 16 (Teacher PD) and Monday, January 19 (Martin Luther King, Jr. Day). With real winter now set in, it’s important that students dress in clothes suitable for the weather. When the temperature (with wind-chill factored in), is less than 20 degrees, students will spend recess indoors. However, when the temperature is above that they’ll be outside for 25-minutes.
We start Unit 4 in math this week – Multiplying and Dividing Decimals. Students took the Unit 3 test on Friday. When I get the tests corrected from both classes, I will send them home with students. At that point, we will also spend a couple days doing both enrichment and review based on the test results.

Welcome to 2015. I hope that everyone had an enjoyable and relaxing break from reality. Just before break, we concluded 2014 with the World Food Fest. We had five continents represented and a sampling of main dishes, appetizers, and desserts from around the world. Many parents came by to visit and the food was plentiful.
We just finished the latest math unit and students will take the test on Thursday. Like the previous tests, I will offer an optional early morning review session on Thursday at 7:30 AM. If your child will be attending, please let me know via e-mail.
