This is a 2.5er this week with two full days of school and a half day prior to Thanksgiving. We’re having a read-in on Wednesday which means students can bring in books, magazines, and other materials to read. They could also dress comfy in pajamas and bring in sleeping bags, blankets, pillows, etc.  To finish off the morning on Wednesday, we’ll have a Charlie Brown Thanksgiving feast. Parent/Teacher conferences are on December 5 and 6 (with a few morning conferences scattered throughout the entire week). If you haven’t signed up yet, please refer to previous e-mails for instructions. I’d be happy to send out a new link if you need one – just e-mail me.

Students took the Unit 1B test in math last week. We’ll be starting a unit on division this week. Below you will see what the Common Core State Standards expect of students in grade 5 for division. The sentences in red are specific to division.

Perform operations with multi-digit whole numbers and with decimals to hundredths.

  • CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.5 Fluently multiply multi-digit whole numbers using the standard algorithm.
  • CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.6 Find whole-number quotients of whole numbers with up to four-digit dividends and two-digit divisors, using strategies based on place value, the properties of operations, and/or the relationship between multiplication and division. Illustrate and explain the calculation by using equations, rectangular arrays, and/or area models.
  • CCSS.Math.Content.5.NBT.B.7 Add, subtract, multiply, and divide decimals to hundredths, using concrete models or drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method and explain the reasoning used.

On Monday, students will attend a Veterans Day assembly at school. Since Avon operates schools on Veterans Day, it’s a great way to not only honor veterans but to also teach students the importance of those who serve for our country.

Our school has a very large book room that houses thousands of leveled texts (mostly novels). Unfortunately, it’s in a sad state of disrepair. I volunteered my class to take on cleanup/restructuring as a class project. We will weave this into our Language Arts program – students will learn about choosing the right book, book levels, genres, book organization, and most importantly, building a sense of community by doing something to help out all of Thompson Brook.

Thank you to everyone who helped or contributed to the Halloween Luncheon in any way. The students had a lot of fun. With Halloween behind us, the start of this week brings us to an all important countdown – 50 shopping days until Christmas. For Hanukkah, the shopping days are even fewer.

Last week we completed Unit 1 in Language Arts and students took a test on this Friday. It was not a test they needed to study for nor did I encourage them to study because it was assessing the skills they learned throughout the unit, not the facts. On the test, they were asked to read a short story and then answer questions about that story. Their answers incorporated the skills they learned when we read Wonder together. The next Language Arts unit begins this week and it’s called “Initiation and Perseverance: Exploration – 1750.” We also begin a new science unit called “Sound” this week.

With students taking spanish this year, I found a useful website for not only translating spanish to english, but also pronouncing the words correctly. Even with four years of high school spanish, I found myself unsure about the pronunciation to a few words. At the very least, the website definitely speaks with a much cooler accent than I have.
