We made it to February without a delay, early dismissal, or school cancellation. (Yeah, I know – I just ruined it by putting it in writing.) With the 2016-2017 school calendar approved by the Board of Education last week, this could potentially be the longest summer of public school your child has ever experienced. It could literally be two weeks longer than last year so start that summer planning now! Or at least ski plans for next weekend.

We are currently working on math Unit 5 – Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators. Students have access to playing related math games on their Google Classroom accounts (from a page of links I created), and they could also use Front Row at home.

Students have now been working on the American Revolution Speech Project for a week. Each student was assigned someone famous from the American Revolution time period to research, and then he/she will give a speech as if that person. More detailed information could be found in the American Revolution Speech Packet 2016. Students have a copy of this as well. The speeches will be held on Wednesday, February 10 and Thursday, February 11. Parents are invited to come watch their child’s speech – a list of the times students are assigned to give the speech will be available later to provide a shorter and convenient window for parents.

Students took the Unit 4 Math Test on Friday, and this week we will start our next unit – Add and Subtract Fractions with Unlike Denominators. This week also brings us halfway through the school year. Students had their last Library class of fifth grade last week. For the second half the year, that class is replaced with Health.

Students will be starting with an American Revolution Speech Project this week. Each student will be assigned someone famous from the American Revolution time period to research, and then give a speech as if that person. More detailed information could be found in the American Revolution Speech Packet 2016. Students have a copy of this as well. The speeches will be held on Wednesday, February 10 and Thursday, February 11. It’s another four-dayer this week. Students will take the Unit 4: Multiply and Divide Decimals Math Test on Friday, and as in the past there will be an early morning (optional) review session that day as well at 7:30 AM. Students also started working with a program called Front Row last week. They have access to using this at home as well. The “code” for entering the site is on their Google Classroom account.

It’s a four-dayer this week, followed by a four-day weekend in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. With the cold temps finally here, students should wear appropriate clothes for the 25 minutes of outdoor recess each day. Unless it’s well below freezing, students go outside so they should be prepared.

Welcome back everyone, and Happy New Year! It’s back to reality this week. With the crossover into 2016, we have a little less than five months of school behind us, and a little more than five months of school ahead of us. We’ll be starting new adventures in many subject areas so stay tuned as the year moves forward!
