This week, students will start the Smarter Balanced (SBAC) testing on Tuesday and Wednesday with the Language Arts portion of the test. Next week, students will take the math section. Last week, they took both the DRP and the practice SBAC. Depending on how the schedule works, there may be a slowdown of math/science (meaning no homework) if we lose those periods for testing.

In math, we are currently working on Unit 7: Geometry and Volume. We finished up with the 2-dimensional triangles and quadrilaterals, and we moved on to volume last week. Students should have their Unit 6 tests back on Monday. The test took a long time and there were kids (who were absent) testing all the way through the past week.

Students were introduced to the Controversial Issue Project 2016 three weeks ago. They have their own copy of the packet, but you could check it out on here as well. You could also see all the details on the website – www.controversialproject.weebly.com. They already decided on a topic, and spent a good amount of time researching last week. Their next step is that they will create/produce either a website, a documentary, or a research paper. Each student will also create a tri-fold poster (visual) of their topic. The entire project is due on May 24.

This week is our final week of Writing Boot Camp. Our team (Team 5-2) is doing a six-week course in writing where we are covering the six traits of writing – Ideas, Organization, Voice, Word Choice, Sentence Fluency, and Conventions. The 90+ students on our team were assessed and then broken up into six mixed groups. Each week, the group meets with a teacher for an hour on both Mondays and Fridays, focusing on one trait (per week).

In math, we are currently working on Unit 7: Geometry and Volume. On Monday, we’ll finish up the first part of the unit that covers polygons (mostly quadrilaterals and triangles), and by mid-week we will be moving on to volume. Students should have their Unit 6 tests back on Monday. The test took a long time and there were kids (who were absent) testing all the way through the past week.

We are still one week away from SBAC testing, but the DRP and practice DRP test will be given on Tuesday this week.

Students were introduced to the Controversial Issue Project 2016 two weeks ago. They have their own copy of the packet, but you could check it out on here as well. You could also see all the details on the website – www.controversialproject.weebly.com. They already decided on a topic, and spent a good amount of time researching last week. The entire project is due on May 24.

This week is our fifth week of Writing Boot Camp. The next week the group will rotate to a new teacher.

We finished Unit 6 in math last week, and students will take the test on Wednesday. I will hold an in-class review session on Tuesday, and then an optional, extra review session before school on Wednesday at 7:30 AM.

On Friday, students took part in a very interesting Junior Achievement lesson. Several parents came in to talk to the class for a session called “What do you do all day?” A wide variety of jobs were described and students had great questions.
